Session: Advanced Tips & Tricks for Successful Online Teaching and Learning: Facilitating Use of Authentic English

Description:
In this six-week workshop, participants will discuss and practice collaboratively some of the more advanced approaches and techniques that lead to effective online environment. Examples of successful synchronous and asynchronous online lessons will be demonstrated and discussed, with a focus on what works and what doesn't in terms of the design, use of Internet communication technology, and techniques to engage participants. The pros and cons of purely online vs. 'blended' on/offline classes will also be discussed and debated.
Target Audience:
The Workshop's target audience is ESL/EFL teachers who teach synchronously online or teachers who are currently using a two-prong (synchronous and asynchronous) approach and want to discuss best practices.
Week-by-week outline of the proposed activities during the 6-week period:
WEEK 1 - Getting to know one another. Introduction. Participants will meet moderators and each other, complete an exploratory survey, and discuss needs and expectations, and their own teaching online teaching ideas.
WEEK 2 - Using 3D Virtual Reality for English learning; David Winet will explain how students can practice their spoken and written English with teachers, other students and native speakers using 3-D spaces such as Second Life, IMVU and Gaiaonline. Participants will participate in a mock class in a VR space.
WEEK 3 - The World Wide Web as Teacher's Aide Deena Furgerson will discuss this topic, providing tips and suggestions, recommendations based on her personal teaching online. Participants will be encouraged to offer their own ideas.
WEEK 4 - Online-Offline: Is There A Difference? Ali Boumoussa will demonstrate the techniques he uses in his online classes and compare them to the ones used in offline.

WEEK 5 - The Email-based Online Class: Vanessa C. Vaile will present on the evolution of an email class and streamlining course management. Svetlana Mintshenko will lead a discussion on interaction in the Online Classroom.
WEEK 6 Wrap-up discussion. Final conclusions about best practices, tricks and tips in the process of planning and creating
effective ESL/EFL teaching and learning online environment. Where to go from here.

David Winet got started teaching English when he was 15 and a neighbor hired him to teach her son. Complete disaster! However, since then he has learned a few tricks He began teaching "English by Email" in 1993, possibly the first internet-based ESL class ever. In 1996 Dave created StudyCom English for Internet, a free online school and research project where real teachers can connect with real students to study and use English.
Deena Lynn Furgerson began teaching EFL about fifteen years ago in Italy. She has been teaching in high schools and at a local university since then. She got interested in computers as a teaching aide while writing her thesis. She contacted StudyCom English for Internet in 2002 and has been teaching English there since. She also tutors high school (English)teachers, organizes English courses for adults and does translation work. She is currently working toward her Ph.D.
Svetlana Mintschenko is Australian, teaches ESL in London and on StudyCom and is working on her M.A. in the U.K. Her special interests are in creating an exciting and warm environment for online students and trainees.
Ali Boumoussa teaches ESL in Morocco and spent several years at Cambridge in the U.K. He has been teaching on StudyCom for a number of years and is one of the most enthusiastic proponents of online ESL to be found.
Vanessa C. Vaile teaches ESL and Literacy in Mountain Air, New Mexico and taught for many years at UC Davis in California. She is an expert in asynchronous online course delivery.
